You probably read the title and thought, "Now, Becky, you have a husband!" Yes, I do. A wonderful husband who provides, protects, loves, and cherishes his family. I am truly blessed. So I'm not talking about a prayer for MY husband. I'm talking about a prayer for my daughters future husband. I realize that she's only 1, but that prayer will continue for all of her life, that God blesses her like He has blessed me. As I was reading "Gentle Passages" I realized the importance of that prayer, but as I read Ruth Bell Grahams poem about her prayer for her future husband (which she wrote at the age of 19) titled "Dear God" I realized how important it was to pray this prayer not only for my daughter, but with her.
It's beautifully written...
It's beautifully written...
Dear God, I prayed, all unafraid
(as we're inclined to do)
I do not need a handsome man
But let him be like You;
I do not need one big and strong
nor yet so very tall,
Nor need he be some genius
Or wealthy, Lord, at all;
But let his head be high, dear God,
And let his eye be clear,
His shoulders straight, whate'er his state,
Whate'er his earthly sphere;
A ruggedness of soul,
And let his whole life show, dear God,
A singleness of goal;
Then when he comes (as he will come)
with quiet eyes aglow,
I'll understand that he's the man
I prayed for long ago.
By the way, Ruth married Billy Graham on August 13, 1943. Beautiful story, isn't it?
Loved it, especially when Ann Graham Lots read it at her dad's funeral. Holly
